Alternative Options

Alternative therapies can be used either alone or with traditional therapies.  All non-prescribed therapies should be discussed with your medical provider before beginning.
These options include, but are not limited to, exercise, massage therapy, acupuncture, and chiropractic manipulation.  For a detailed list and description of alternative therapies please go to the following web site and see pages 36-47, www.painfoundation.org/Publications/TreatmentOptions2006.pdf.

Exercise

The most common discussed method to relieve chronic pain, especially if it is pain involving any joint in the body, is exercise.  Exercise can help maintain function and flexibility of joints and muscles and lessen pain.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy, when performed by a trained professional, can provide pain relief and relaxation with very little effort on the part of the person in pain.  Though this therapy can be beneficial, most insurance companies do not provide coverage for massages.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient art of balancing ying and yang or in English terms, balancing the energy in your body.  It has long been believed that acupuncture can relieve many different ailments, including pain. Always check the credentials of the acupuncturist as there are several different certifications/licenses.  Unfortunately, the majority of health insurance companies do not provide acupuncture as a reimbursed benefit.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractors have specialized training in care of the alignment of the spine and the nerves that begin from the spinal cord. It is always best to check with your primary provider to see if this type of care is appropriate.
